Key Functions of Co

  • Co is necessary for the processes of stem growth, elongating coleoptiles and for healthy bud development.
  • Co forms part of the coenzyme cobalamin (vitamin B₁₂). Cobalamin-dependant enzymes play a role in N₂ fixation by Rhizobium species in root nodules. Under Co deficiency, protein synthesis is suppressed that results in smaller nodules and lower crop yields.
  • Furthermore, the haemoprotein Leghaemoglobin that is an oxygen carrier for optimum nodule activity, is also dependent on Co.
